NASA’s Curiosity rover has found a new oxygen mystery on Mars

NASA's Curiosity rover has shown that Oxygen behaves in a mysterious way on Mars as the level of the gas throughout spring and summer rose by as much as 30 per cent.

NASA has a new mystery to solve on Mars: The rise and fall of Oxygen levels. In this photo, NASA’s Curiosity rover took this selfie on October 11, 2019, the 2,553rd Martian day, or sol, of its mission. The rover drilled twice in this location, nicknamed “Glen Etive” (pronounced “glen EH-tiv”). About 984 feet (300 meters) behind the rover, Vera Rubin Ridge rises up. Behind it lies the floor of Gale Crater, which Curiosity is exploring, and the northern rim of the crater.

NASA’s Curiosity rover’s has added a new mystery for scientists studying Mars, with samples from the rover showing a seasonal change around Oxygen levels near the surface of the Gale Crater on the red planet.

Author Rashmi Saksena on women who take up arms

Speaking at the Khushwant Singh Literary Festival in Kasauli recently, Saksena elaborated upon what motivates these women to abandon the traditional playbook for girls and embrace the uncertain life of an insurgent.

Arms and the Woman

Through the stories of Purnima, Khalida, Ribini and 13 others in her book She Goes To War, author Rashmi Saksena attempts to fathom what goes into the making of a woman militant.

Purnima, a faith healer in Manipur, and Ribini, a nurse at a hospital in Assam. Unlikely occupations for women who once lived life on the run: the former as the fearless Nalini, a member of the rebel Kangleipak Communist Party, and the latter as “lance corporal Raisumai” of the Bodo Security Force, a banned separatist outfit in the North-East. In Kashmir, Khalida was just another schoolgirl till January 21, 2007, the day she was found with a bullet through her head. No one knows who killed Khalida, but hers is a story repeated at other times also in the conflict-ridden state.

Bengaluru-based Devika Krishnan on how design can create sustainable livelihoods for vulnerable communities

Bengaluru-based Krishnan, 50, who recently spoke about the design of social business at DesignUp festival in her city, has realised the importance of keeping enterprises small for self-sustenance and that women are a much-ignored untapped workforce.

By the People, For the People

Devika Krishnan

It was her first project after she studied ceramic design at NID (Ahmedabad), which made Devika Krishnan aware of the realities of gender, caste or class. The project, through Dastkar Ranthambore, was aimed at reviving black pottery with the remotely located potters near Ranthambore in the early ’90s. The potters were quick to question: “why a south Indian, upper-caste, young woman (who should ideally be married and raising children) be working with Rajasthani, low-caste potters?” says Krishnan.

Every single person is political: Aparna Sen on her new film Ghawre Bairey Aaj and the need for a moderate voice

Unlike the novel or Satyajit Ray’s film, where the politics of the author is not only blatant but his allegiance is foregrounded, Aparna Sen is more nuanced, less blatant in her adaptation of Gharey Bairey.

Aparna Sen apologises profusely for being late. She folds her hands and literally stoops for arriving twenty minutes later than the scheduled time for her session at the Jagran Film Festival. “There was some miscommunication. I hate being late. I am always punctual. In fact, I am known for it,” she says, reminding how Friday was an anomaly. Later, when someone reminds her of her maladaptive relationship with time — she has made only 13 films in her long-spanning career — Sen is apologetic again. The statement was uttered in jest but she takes responsibility for it. “I only make films when I have something to say,” she asserts. Sen as a filmmaker is keenly aware of the time we are living in, and her latest film, Ghawre Bairey Aaj bears a fitting testimony to it
